“Sport” identifies a specific existential dimension in the physical condition of the “fall” and in the same way a pretext to reposition the ideals of competition and performance normally based on principles of exclusion and conformity to precise anatomical, social, behavioral and cultural rules. Specifically, “Sport” attempts to widen the gaze on the very concept of "performativity" of the body, both in artistic and sporting performance. In this sense, sport is investigated as one of the different articulations of the forms of dominant power, in the intersections between individual expression and public narration, at the crossroads with the construction of national, cultural and gender identities. “Sport” by Salvo Lombardo is an opportunity to re-discuss the contemporary canons and imaginaries applied to the body in the “occident” trying to reveal both the desperate attempt to resist its fall, as well as the inevitable, necessary and at times "loving" acceptance of the decline: of a condition, of a narrative system, of a world. The performance is the third chapter of the trilogy L'Esemplare Capovolto articulated in the rewriting of three historical works of the Italian academic dance repertoire of the late 19th century: “Gran Ballo Excelsior” (1881), “Amor” (1886), “Sport” (1897).
Salvo Lombardo is a performer, choreographer and curator of different projects. Since 2016, he has been the artistic director of Chiasma. His works have been presented in festivals, theatres, museums, and independent spaces in Italy and abroad. From 2019 to 2021, he co-curated Resurface Festival in Rome. Since 2021, he has been the artistic director of Interazioni – Festival and he is one of the founding members of Ostudio in Rome. From 2022 to 2024, he was an associate artist at MilanOltre Festival and Lavanderia a Vapore, with which he currently collaborates as dramaturg within the Iceberg research project. He is currently an associate artist at the Oriente Occidente Festival.
With “Sport” by Salvo Lombardo, a highly intelligent—though deliberately slow—performance took the stage, dissolving any claim to competition through its repeated scenes of agonism… Lombardo seems to suggest that what truly matters is starting over, trying again, and re-exploring the things of the world.

Sport is an essential work that everyone should see, as it shows how it is concretely possible to deconstruct a given system (such as athletic competition and agonism) in favor of a new framework—one that proposes an ethic capable of rewriting its source without destroying it, stripping it of all traces of toxicity.

Lombardo’s work is marked by a mature, sorrowful sobriety, with a significant emotional weight […] that becomes an independent, absolute tragic-choreographic paradigm […]. Because it is truly time to give our tragedies an autonomous, free voice, now that the long measurements comparing the present to the past have come to an end.
